P4M Summit: Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace and Prosperity

Colleagues, Australia has always been one of the world’s strongest supporters of the United Nations. 

Our position on its future and the future of global relations is clear – global challenges cannot be solved by countries acting alone. 

Especially right now, when we are facing one of the toughest periods in modern history. 

The war in the Middle East, an ongoing land war in Europe, the global inflation crisis, the fuel crisis and the rise of AI are incredibly serious challenges.

To solve them, we must commit to the UN Charter and resolve to making the global system work more effectively

Australia has been a consistent voice at the UN for stability and sovereignty for over eighty years.

We now want to help the Council meet the challenges of the next decade. 

To this end, yesterday I launched Australia’s campaign for the UN Security Council for the 2029-30 term. 

Our approach will be to listen with respect, partner as equals and protect what matters most – security, safety and prosperity.

We all know the multilateral system is under immense strain right now.

It is our responsibility therefore to both protect and evolve the system – focusing on those functions that the UN delivers best.

We believe middle powers must accept their responsibility to play a stronger role. Coming together under different partnerships and arrangements to make a difference. 

That is what Australia is determined to achieve.  

Stepping up as an outward-looking middle power in service of a peaceful, prosperous and stable Indo-Pacific, and beyond. 

Assisting smaller Pacific nations with development and security and recognising their extreme vulnerability to climate change.

Investing more than ever in new security and economic partnerships, covering issues like economic resilience, development finance, maritime security, climate action and emerging technologies.

Innovating in crucial ways. Our social media ban has led the world and started a global movement for change to shape the digital world to meet human needs.

And of course, upholding international law in all its dimensions.

This approach is right for the world – and I look forward to combine with you to strengthen and improve global relations.
