WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury applauded the release of the 2026 update to the U.S. National Strategy for Financial Literacy from the Financial Literacy and Education Commission (FLEC), which is chaired by the Secretary of the Treasury and is composed of the heads of 23 federal agencies and the White House Domestic Policy Council.

“The newest United States National Strategy for Financial Literacy is a roadmap to help every American build the knowledge and skills needed to achieve financial security for themselves and their families,” said Secretary Scott Bessent. “The advent of Trump Accounts demonstrates what this approach looks like in practice. By giving young Americans and their families an opportunity to save and invest together, we can make financial education tangible, help a new generation establish sound financial habits from an early age, and build the knowledge and confidence to participate in our financial markets.”

The Financial Literacy Strategy outlines the FLEC’s goals for advancing financial literacy and education across the United States and identifies priority areas and actions to help Americans build the knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions, achieve their financial goals, and enhance their financial well-being.

The Financial Literacy Strategy establishes four priority areas for the FLEC:

The Financial Literacy Strategy also identifies best practices for delivering effective financial education, including providing actionable and timely education at key financial decision points, tailoring education to life stages and individual situations, reinforcing concepts over time, incorporating experiential and hands-on learning, supporting high-quality instruction, and evaluating program effectiveness.

The Financial Literacy Strategy was developed through consultation with FLEC-represented agencies, public input, and independent research on financial literacy and education.
